Don’t Miss The Harry Smith Festival!

November 12, 2010

Thanks to Kurt Gegenhuber of Celestial Monochord for leading me to the Facebook page of the 3rd Annual Harry Smith Festival in Millheim, Pennsylvania. The festival proper, at which you’ll hear Anthology highlights performed in modern dress, will be held on Sunday, November 14 from 2-8 PM at the Elk Creek Cafe+ Aleworks, but if you’re in the neighborhood, you’ll want to turn up for the very special pre-festival concert featuring Peter Stampfel, an original Fug and later a member of the legendary Holy Modal Rounders, and Catherine Irwin, formerly of Freakwater. These two don’t turn up every day, and it’s bound to be a great show.

The Festival will benefit the HOPE Fund and the East Penns Valley Public Library, two more than worthy causes, so please stop in and tell them Harry sent you. The video is the trailer for the amazingly good Holy Modal Rounders documentary Bound To Lose, which probably never got to your local multiplex. It is available on DVD, however, and also on Netflix, so take a look if you like the trailer. Please enjoy! and if anyone does make it to the Festival send us a report, hear?

It’s Veteran’s Day

November 11, 2010

This is the only Veteran’s Day song I know. After hearing this one, you may agree with me that it’s the only one we need. I’ve written about Tom Russell before, so won’t repeat myself here. Thanks to paganmaestro for the video, to Tom Russell for the song, and to all who sacrifice so much in their country’s service. Please enjoy.
