Here Come the Chilean Miners!

October 12, 2010

They’re due to be hoisted out beginning later tonight, and will no doubt never see the inside of a mine again. But while we cheer their safe return, let’s not forget the men who risk their lives every day in one kind of hole in the ground or another. My grandfather worked in a coal mine in Western Pennsylvania, and my old man would likely have joined him had he not enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII. It was a tough life then and it’s a tough life life now.

The video attached isn’t really a video – it’s a still picture attached to an audio track of Patty Loveless’s cover of Darrell Scott’s You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive. Tonight you’ll see some happy faces around the mouth of that mine, but this song will remind you what a rare sight that is.
